Pieter Ampe and Benjamin Verdonck are old friends who share a love of slapstick. For the first time, they share the stage as well – they are planning a duet. But that’s about all they share … While one of them ponders what might happen if he bought a one-seat couch and remained seated on it for the entire performance, the other is impatient to reproach him for the embarrassment this somewhat unusual approach is bound to cause … Theatre artist Benjamin Verdonck keeps his home-city Antwerp on tenterhooks with his spectacular actions in public space. The approach of dancer and choreographer Pieter Ampe is much more discreet and restrained. We Don’t Speak to Be Understood – the strangely ambivalent title of their performance lays down the programme for an on-stage ping-pong of two artists who could not be any more idiosyncratic or different. This is the debut of Pieter Ampe and Benjamin Verdonck at Wiener Festwochen.
